Using the Historic Environment Record

The Buckinghamshire Historic Environment Record (HER) is a public environmental record which is used for the purposes of land use planning, conservation, research, education and general interest. It comprises a computerised database, supporting paper records, maps, a collection of aerial photographs and slides and a library. The HER aims to record all reported archaeological sites and finds in Buckinghamshire from the earliest evidence of human activity to the end of the Cold War in 1989. These include records of listed buildings and industrial complexes. The HER is located in offices in the centre of Aylesbury. Search our online database Unlocking Buckinghamshire's Past.

Any HER enquiries concerning the Milton Keynes Council area should be directed to Milton Keynes Council’s Archaeological Officer, at Milton Keynes Council, Telephone:  01908 691691. Alternatively you can go to the HER enquiry page on Milton Keynes Council's website.

Although every reasonable effort is made to ensure the reliability of HER information it must be understood that the record is not definitive and that the accuracy of any particular piece of information should be verified from the original source.  Use the links on the left to find out more about:

  • The development of the HER
  • HER access and charging policies

You can contact the Archaeology Team at Buckinghamshire County Council, County Hall, Aylesbury, Bucks HP20 1UY.
