About the project

The initial brief for the Pauls Row Public Realm Improvement project was set in the autumn of 2011, as part of the Public Realm Action Plan for High Wycombe Town Centre. The Public Realm Action Plan was undertaken to identify short term opportunities for improvement of the public realm, consistent with the long term vision for the Town Centre.

In 2026 High Wycombe Town Centre will be an appealing and attractive destination with a thriving economic centre and a high quality public realm, which emphasises the natural, historic and cultural assets of the town. The town centre will be a place where people choose to live work and visit, with a variety of uses that include a good retail offer, high quality office and residential accommodation and cultural and educational opportunities centred on the Swan Theatre and Bucks New University campus.

The town centre will be well connected and accessible on foot by road and by public transport. The provision of an improved street network will allow for the integration of the historic and expanded town centres, with new high quality public spaces connecting key areas together through more direct and attractive linkages for pedestrians and cyclists and creating opportunities to enjoy the River Wye.

Pauls Row is the first in a series of Town Centre Master Plan improvement Works seeking to enhance the visual appearance of the area along with improved pedestrian and vehicular interface, as well as encouraging pedestrian movements around the town centre. The project seeks to reduce street clutter and enhance the finishes to both carriageway and footways and improve drainage and Street Lighting and personal security, whilst incorporating Landscaping and High Quality Public Realm material finishes.

Construction started in late September 2014 and was completed in early 2015.
