Road signs policy

Signs on the highway are necessary to give information and direction to users in the interests of road safety and mobility. These signs are managed under legal powers, and regulations are in place in relation to the type and positioning of these signs.

Non-highway related signs may be placed on the highway under licence by the local authority but require consent. Many requests for new signs are received but not all are approved for various reasons, including over proliferation of signs. Too many signs in one area can have an adverse effect on road safety and the environment.
