Section 50 Licence

You need a licence if you need to place or retain apparatus in the street. A Section 50 licence allows for breaking up opening the street, or any sewer, drain or tunnel underneath. 

To make an application you need to provide:

    • Two plans showing extent of proposed works (marked in red)
    • Copy of a public liability insurance certificate
    • Confirmation that statutory undertakers have been informed
    • Adoption Letter from Statutory undertaker (if applicable)
    • Supervisor Accreditations
    • Operatives Accreditations
    • Registration of Works
    • Contract Value and Proposed Programme for works

Apply for a Section 171 Licence making of excavations in the public highway for minor works;

You need a section 171 licence if you need to undertake small excavations in the highway such as trial holes, Minor highway alterations & installation of building boundary walls on or adjacent to the highway.

To make an application you need to provide:

    • Two plans showing extent of proposed works (marked in red)
    • Copy of a public liability insurance certificate
    • Confirmation that statutory undertakers have been informed
    • Supervisor Accreditations
    • Operatives Accreditations
    • Registration of Works
    • Contract Value and Proposed Programme for works

What happens next

Please note that your application will not be processed should you fail to submit the required supporting documents.  Failure to submit supporting information will cause delays and may affect your start date.

Applications will take approximately 4 weeks to complete (providing all documents are submitted).

The licence will be valid for 28 calendar days. A licence can only be renewed twice, after which, a new initial licence must be applied for.
