Commercial school buses

There are many dedicated school bus routes that are run on a commercial basis independently of the Council, with parents buying tickets directly from the bus companies. The number of commercial routes is set to increase from September 2021.

Additional commercial school bus routes planned for September 2021

The Council has worked with bus companies to help set-up new additional commercial dedicated school-only bus routes to support parents to get their child to school.

All children who currently pay for a seat on a council-run school bus who want a seat on a bus from September 2021 will have the opportunity to buy a seat on a commercial school bus or on a public bus or train.

The Council provides school buses for children who are eligible for transport assistance because of low income, distance from school or special educational needs. If there are spare seats remaining on these buses, these are then made available to paying parents of non-eligible children.

The Council’s school bus routes are changing from September 2021 to ensure that they are cost-effective when contracts are retendered this summer. Currently only 66% of seats on council paid for school buses are taken up by children who qualify for transport assistance.

This means the Council will focus on providing school buses where there is a need for children who qualify for transport assistance under the Council’s policy, and there will therefore be fewer spare seats on Council-run routes for purchase by parents whose children are not eligible for free school transport.

From September 2021 bus companies are increasing the number of new commercial school bus routes across the county. The Council has worked with the companies to identify potential new routes, and the companies are taking over some Council-run routes on which all, or nearly all, pupils are not eligible for free transport and are paying for their seat.

Bus companies offer services on a commercial basis which means that there needs to be enough demand from parents for seats in order to make a bus route commercially worthwhile. Likewise, the companies are responsible for setting ticket prices at a level which makes their services financially viable.

The companies have all published information on their websites setting out the potential routes. Not all companies are advertising their tickets for sale as yet. We have asked them to do so as a priority to help parents plan for their child’s travel to school in September.

Links are provided in the route list below. Routes may also be subject to later change depending on ticket demand.

Please note that commercial companies also run other school bus routes not listed here. Please check their websites for further details.
