Restricted Access to Collections
The Archives searchroom is now open again following flood damage. However, access to some collections is still limited, particularly parts of our collections of inclosure maps, wills, parish registers and motor vehicle licensing records. Please contact us on 01296 382587 or firstname.lastname@example.org before visiting.
Resources for Schools
1. Educational resources
In recent years the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies has been developing services for schools which can bring local archives into the classroom to complement the topics taught at different Key Stages in the National Curriculum.
These are on hold at present but we hope to restart them soon. Our web based learning packs are still available as are our Victorians, Tudors and World War I educational resources.
Resources have been produced to accompany the workshops but they can also be purchased separately. In addition the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies has other purchasable resources which may be of use to teachers and pupils alike.
Making Victorian life a real experience
Hard copy resource pack to accompany workshop of same name. Free with workshop but can be purchased separately for £15.
This resource pack is a compilation of resources taken from both the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies and the County Museum collections. The pack contains 20 quality reproductions of photographs, census returns and maps brought together as a case study of Miss Millburn, schoolmistress at St. Johns school, Aylesbury. The pack can be copied for distribution in class or used to create a display in the classroom.
Victorian crime and punishment
CD Rom to accompany workshop of same name. Free with workshop but not available separately.
This resource pack is a compilation of resources taken from both the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies and the Buckinghamshire County Museum collections. The pack contains quality reproductions of photographs, census returns and maps of Aylesbury focussing on the Victorian genre painting of The Jury, by John Morgan.
CD Rom to accompany workshop of same name. Free with workshop but can be purchased separately for £9.99 from the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies or the County Museum.
Tudor records including inventories, parish registers and clothing accounts from the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies collections are reproduced with translations and explanatory text. A section on buildings identifies Tudor buildings and their features in the county and there are quiz pages for children to use.
Buckinghamshire Soldiers in WWI: Not Forgotten
A CD which starts with a selection of documents presented in PowerPoint which illustrate different aspects of the war as it affected the Buckinghamshire regiments. This is followed by documents reflecting the lives of three different Buckinghamshire soldiers from very different walks of life. Letters, census returns, trench log books, photographs and diaries are all used to convey an impression of the life of a soldier during the First War. There is also an artefacts box which represents a soldier’s kit and can be borrowed by schools.
Price £5 from the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies
