Parent and child placements

Sometimes parents needs extra support in looking after their baby or child and go into a foster care placement together.

The role of the foster carer in this instance is different from a regular foster carer. Their role is to help the mother or father to develop their parenting skills and support them in learning to look after their child. The parent may not necessarily be a young person. The foster carer's role is not to provide full care for the baby but they have an important role in observing and recording how the parent looks after the child.

Parent and baby carers have usually had a lot of fostering experience and have worked with children. You may be a parent yourselves but this is not essential.

Parent and baby fostering, can be complex and challenging but anyone put forward for a placement will receive specialist training and ongoing support.
