Benefits to consumers
The award promotes food businesses to provide healthier options. This can be increasing fruit and vegetables or reducing fat, sugar and salt. It also recognises healthy options for children and staff training.
On average 1 in 6 meals are eaten outside of the house. There is a concern around obesity levels and the NHS predicts that 1/2 the UK will be obese by 2050. Buckinghamshire NHS spends on average £63.8m every year on patients who are ill because of obesity. Also the number of people in the county who have diabetes because of their weight levels has increased by 30% in 5 years from 16,200 in 2008 to 21,000 in 2012.
