Spotlight on: Home Library Service Doorstep Deliveries

Joan getting her first Home Library Service doorstep deliveryMeet Joan. Joan is a new client for the Home Library Service in Buckinghamshire and is seen here receiving her first ever doorstep delivery of books! Joan finds it hard to get to her local library, so she now uses the Home Library Service to get her fix of large print books.

Earlier in the year, when lockdown began, Home Library Service Volunteers managed to arrange some last-minute doorstep book drops to many of our readers, supplying them with enough books to last couple of months. Later, library staff also helped to carry out more doorstep book drops to readers across the county to keep them going with books for another month or two.

Now that libraries have re-opened, most of our Home Library Service volunteers have returned and are happily resuming their usual book deliveries to their clients. Instead of the usual home visit and cup of tea, volunteers are welcomed at the door and deliver their books to doorsteps. They take lots of safety precautions such as wearing face masks and using lots of hand gel but they are still met with the same welcoming smiles.

Some our volunteers have gone the extra mile by helping us with doorstep deliveries to readers who are not their usual clients, which has been an enormous help. To those without an active volunteer at present, our Home Library Service Coordinator, Roberta Wixon has been busy with deliveries. She has also been recruiting new clients, such as Joan, by signing them up on the doorstep for a new library card and registering them for the Home Library Service.

Roberta says,

“I feel so proud of our volunteers and staff who have been involved in keeping the Home Library Service operating during the Covid-19 crisis.”
