Booking a space in the Archives

Please book via our email archives@buckinghamshire.gov.uk letting us know the dates you would like to book and a list of the documents you would like to view. Up to eight documents can be requested per morning and afternoon session. There is currently no document production on the day. We need a minimum of three working days' notice to retrieve documents for your visit. We will be booking seats up to four weeks in advance.

Please do not travel unless you have received a booking confirmation from us. You can book a place in both the archive search room and in Local Studies.

When you arrive

We will ask you to sign-in at the desk in reception. We are not asking you to show ID for the time being. Staff will give you a brief introduction to the available facilities including lockers and toilets. Please be aware that the office closes for lunch and customers will need to leave the building for this time, but there are plenty of shops, cafes and restaurants within a few minutes' walk. Aylesbury library is also only a short walk away.

Face coverings

We recommend wearing a face covering when visiting the Archives or Local Studies. This is in line with government advice to wear a face covering in indoors places where you may come into contact with people you do not normally meet.

You should not visit if you feel unwell or are self-isolating.

We have kept these safety measures in every library:
• hand sanitisation stations
• perspex screens at counters and customer desks in the searchroom.

Using public computers and microfilm readers

We provide cleaning materials for you to use, so you can sanitise the equipment before and after use.

Using the searchroom

Please bring your own equipment including pencil and computer as well as a camera if you would like copies. Hand-held scanners and lighting equipment are not permitted.
When you arrive, a member of the Archive Team will confirm your seat and explain how the searchroom system is running. If you need to leave the search room please ensure staff are aware, so they can let you through the security door.

Suspended or reduced facilities

We are not currently selling tea, coffee or hot chocolate, nor is our coffee room open. If you would like to get something to eat or drink, there are several cafes and restaurants available within a short walk of the archive. Eating and drinking is not permitted within the Archives and Local Studies areas.
