From the mid-eighteenth century until the 1930s, local
directories were used to provide information on the trade, public
buildings and services of a particular town or village. They would
also supply details of the nobility and gentry of that area. The
most important series published were Kelly's Directories from 1799 to
1939, presented in county volumes for Buckinghamshire. Many county
record offices and libraries have good series of these directories,
including at the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies. The dates of
the directories indexed here are 1792, 1798, 1811, 1824 and 1832.
The database presented here contains information from
some of these Buckinghamshire directories. There are over 5000 entries
included in the database, but this is by no means a complete index
for all Buckinghamshire directories. The index may be supplemented
over time.
