Home improvements

Following complaints we are watching rogue traders very closely. Like the Rogue Traders and House of Horrors television programmes, we have set up houses fitted with hidden cameras and invited traders to fix 'faults' while we watched the work being carried out.
Honest and competent traders have nothing to fear from these projects. Where we find that there is an intention to rip people off we will take action against the trader. If you have received a rough deal from a trader, nominate them as a candidate to invite into our next house by contacting us.

Gas Safe Register
To work on any gas installations and appliances safely and legally, engineers have to be on the Gas Safe Register. Visit the Gas Safe Register for more information
Tool hire shops
We surveyed tool hire shops and inspected the tools on hire for electrical and mechanical safety. We also checked advertised prices, supplies of safety equipment and training provided on how to use the equipment supplied.
The results from these tests, where the shops knew who we were, were very encouraging as there were very few problems. The systems the hire shops had in place for ensuring the customers' safety appeared to be comprehensive.
Remember to:
- Check the price includes VAT and any other extras that might be needed
- Insist on proper instruction, either written or a practical demonstration, and don't leave the shop until you feel comfortable you know how to use the equipment safely.
- Check if there are hazards to look out for and make sure you have suitable safety equipment ie goggles, face mask, ear defenders and if necessary hire it with the tools.
- Use equipment safely.
Using a builder
Make sure you:
- Always get written quotes from several traders. Assess the quotes to ensure the cost of the whole project has been included. For large structural or expensive work look at the plans that have been drawn up.
- Make a note of the information the trader gives you.
- Talk to friends and neighbours who have had work done for recommendations. Did they encounter any problems? Check the quality and finish of the work they had carried out.
- Be clear about the work that you want doing and put your requirements in writing.
- Clear communication is vital when working with builders - ensure you understand what they are saying.
- If a builder claims to be registered with a trade association check with the association that the claim is genuine.
- Use local firms that give a proper address. Local builders should have regular contact with the planning authorities
