Student support

Major changes have been made to the way student finance is delivered for students entering higher education with effect from the 2009/10 academic year.

In the past, local authorities have been responsible for the administration of applications for higher education student financial support for students living in England. This has changed for students whose courses start from September 2009 onwards. All students living in England who commence courses in the 2009/10 academic year and beyond are required to apply to a new service known as Student Finance England.  This new centralised service is delivered on behalf of the Department for Innovation, Universities and Skills (DIUS) by the Student Loans Company (SLC).

Although Buckinghamshire County Council will no longer have responsibility for the delivery of financial support for students commencing courses in the 2009/10 academic year or later, we will continue to administer applications from existing students who currently receive support from us, i.e. those who entered higher education prior to September 2009.  These arrangements will continue until 31 March 2011 when local authorities’ responsibility for existing students comes to an end and any remaining students will transfer to Student Finance England.

Further information is available by clicking on the Directgov website link at the foot of this page or by contacting Student Finance England by telephone on 0845 300 5090.

Buckinghamshire County Council also administers the student support service for Milton Keynes Council under a joint working arrangement.

The Student Support Team also provides post 16 school learner support funds to students from low-income families who remain in schools beyond compulsory leaving age. This help is available to both Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes residents.

The team is also responsible for administering The Frogmoor Foundation, a local charity that provides grants towards full-time courses of further and higher education, educational visits abroad and the cost of equipment required for the entry to a trade of profession.  Applicants must be between the ages of 16 and 25 and resident in Buckinghamshire.  For more information see the download below.

Buckinghamshire County Council and Milton Keynes Council do not make discretionary awards.
