Take a Break

Family Placement Service logo

Take a Break provides regular short breaks to disabled children for children either living at home with their own family or with foster carers.

Take a Break foster care is tremendously rewarding, helping both the child and the family, allowing the child to make new friends and have more opportunities and experiences of life outside of their own family and school. Parents get more time to spend with their other children, or with each other, safe in the knowledge that their child is happy and well cared for in a safe and loving family home environment.

We want ordinary people who have time, energy and a genuine desire to help a child with a disability. You don't need special qualifications or previous experience as long as you are willing to learn and participate in training. It will help to have a positive outlook, patience, tolerance and dedication, motivation, energy and a good sense of humour plus the confidence to cope with a variety of situations, including building an ongoing working relationship with the child’s family as well as a relationship with the child.

We understand that choosing to care for a disabled child is a tremendous undertaking and we will help, encourage, support and guide you through every aspect of the application process to ensure that you make the right decision.

Once you become a foster carer you will be given all the appropriate general and specialised training as needed, regular 1:1 support and an allowance towards the child’s care, expenses and special equipment where necessary.
