Visiting the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies

Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies Entrance
Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies Entrance

The Centre has its own entrance on a slip road to the south side of New County Offices in Walton Street, Aylesbury. Although there is no parking available in the immediate vicinity of County Hall, there are a number of short and long-stay car parks in the centre of the town, within five or ten minutes' walking distance of the Centre. The train and bus stations are approximately five minutes walk away. A map is available via the link at the bottom of the page.

Our opening hours are:

Archives: Tues-Fri 9am-5.15pm; Sat 9am-3.45pm; Sunday and Monday closed
Local Studies: Tues, Wed, Fri 9am-5.15pm; Thurs 9am-8pm; Sat 9am-4pm; Sunday and Monday closed
On Saturdays no documents produced in the Archives search room 12pm-2pm

The Local Studies Library has all materials on open access.  However, you may need a microfilm or microfiche reader to view certain items like parish registers, local newspapers and the Index of Births, Marriages and Deaths.  Access to online family history resources including Ancestry.co.uk and FreeBMD is available on our PCs. Please telephone 01296 382250 to book a reader or a computer, especially if you are travelling a long way.

Visitors to the Archives are advised to telephone 01296 382587 to book a seat.  This is particularly important when maps may be required, as the large map table is often booked well in advance.   Members of staff introduce visitors to the archive catalogues and help fill in document request slips.  Records are brought from the strong rooms on demand, and we aim to have your documents with you in 15 minutes.  Staff are on hand to answer queries and to supervise the handling of the documents.

Visitors to the Archives will need to provide proof of identity showing their name address and signature, such as a driving licence or a bank card and utility bill. The Archives section of the Centre for Buckinghamshire Studies is a member of the County Archives Research Network (CARN). CARN tickets issued here can be produced as proof of identity on subsequent visits and are accepted by many other Record Offices around the country.  You will be asked to sign in to the Archives every time you visit.

We allow the use of digital cameras, subject to a £5.00 charge for the day to cover as many images as you want to take. Most records from the archives can be copied; exceptions include fragile records, bound volumes and records on parchment. The local studies stock can be copied using our self service photocopier.
