Langley Park historic landscape project

Azalea in Langley Park
Azalea in Langley Park

Langley Park lies in south Buckinghamshire in the parish of Wexham. It is made up of the historic Langley Park, Black Park and the adjoining Rowley Farm.

We are working with partners on:

  • Management and conservation
  • Improving access and recreational opportunities
  • Better understanding of the park's history

Awarded just under £2 million from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the project, work started early in 2008.

Why the estate is important:

  • Dates back to soon after the Norman Conquest
  • Evidence of banks and ditches from a medieval deer park
  • Landscape patterns consistent with the 17th century and including elements from the 18th century
  • Influence of 'Capability' Brown
  • Associations with Windsor / view to Windsor Castle
  • Victorian plant collections
  • Period Rhododendron collection
  • Rare turbine driven Rowley Farm Mill
  • Designations of local and national importance
  • Landscape, archaeological and ecological interest
  • Public access via country parks and the rights of way network

These pages give information on the history, archaeology, wildlife and key features of the estate, together with some ideas for the future, as well as a list of frequently asked questions about the current project.
