Local waste removal

4. Asbestos and garden chemicals

Amersham, Aston Clinton, Aylesbury, Beaconsfield, High Heavens and Langley can accept carefully wrapped bonded asbestos and hazardous garden chemicals (not trade/commercial). We accept up to 5 litres of garden chemicals or paraffin.

Asbestos

Asbestos is a naturally occurring silicate mineral which was widely used as a building material in the UK before 1999. When asbestos fibres are inhaled they can cause serious diseases, which are responsible for around 4,500 deaths a year.  Asbestos is regarded as the greatest single cause of work-related deaths in the UK.

If you have asbestos to dispose of, we would recommend  a private waste contractor who is registered to handle the material.  You can find these specialists by contacting members of the Asbestos Removal Contractors Association or by checking Local waste removal.

However, if you are disposing of it yourself at a Household Recycling Centre, you will need to apply for a waste permit.  The maximum amount accepted is three normal sized bin-liner bags or four sheets of approx 8ft by 3ft.

Conditions of disposal

  • Only bonded asbestos accepted
  • All wood, glass, plastic and metal must have been removed before disposal
  • Must be double bagged and wrapped
  • See site attendant before disposal.

Procedure for safe deposit

  • Attendant will unlock, open and securely tie back the door of the container

  • Attendant will spray inside the container to damp down any materials before the waste is placed within

  • The member of the public disposing of the asbestos waste will then place it into the container. Do not throw.

  • Immediately after deposit the attendant will spray inside the container before closing and securely locking the door.
