Aylesbury public transport hub
With Aylesbury Vale District Council we have a vision of a traffic free zone for the Market Square supported by measures to encourage more people to use the bus service, cycle and walk to the town centre and these schemes will assist delivery of these aspirations. In late February 2006 confirmation was received that we had obtained £14.38m of funding for the scheme.
Aims of the scheme
- Bus priority measures around the town centre on Friarage Road, station Way, Walton Street, Exchange Street, High Street, New Street and Oxford Road (north)
- Improved access and links to Aylesbury Railway Station.
- A new high quality, pedestrian and cycle bridge linking south Aylesbury to the railway station, the bus station and the town centre called The Bourg Walk.
- An upgraded and revamped modern Bus Station.
- New 'Super Stops' with real time travel information.
- Facilitate increased frequency of buses and reduced journey times.
- Increased provision for pedestrians and cyclists
- Improvements especially to High Street, Walton Street and Whitehill Street to facilitate the movement of buses.
