In 2001 the Bernwood Ancient Hunting Forest Project was launched
as a unique initiative seeking to promote and focus attention on an
area of the county that has been previously overlooked and
undervalued.
The project aims to increase awareness, understanding and
appreciation of Buckinghamshire’s former royal Forest and to
promote its protection and enhancement.

The Buckinghamshire Sites and Monuments Record (SMR) is a public
environmental record which is used for the purposes of land use
planning, conservation, research, education and general interest. It
comprises a computerised database, supporting paper records, maps, a
collection of aerial photographs and slides and a library. The
SMR aims to record all reported archaeological sites and
finds in Buckinghamshire from the earliest evidence of human
activity to the end of the Second World War in 1945. These include
records of listed buildings and industrial complexes. The
SMR is located in offices in the centre of Aylesbury.

Unlocking Buckinghamshire’s Past will not only provide 24/7
access to the records held by Buckinghamshire but is also in the
process of developing a range of resource materials for
teachers.

Listed Buildings
Listed Buildings have been identified as being of special
historic or architectural interest. The Statutory List of Buildings
of Special Architectural or Historic Interest is compiled by the
Secretary of State for Culture, Media and Sport.
Listed Buildings are categorised into 3 grades to indicate their
relative importance:
Grade I - Buildings of exceptional interest
Grade II* - Buildings of importance
Grade II - Buildings of special interest
A short record / description of each listed building is kept by
District and County Councils.
Images of England is an English Heritage project t place images
of all the listed buildings in England on the web – it can be found
at
www.imagesofengland.org.uk/.
Another useful source for details of historic buildings are The
Pevsner Architectural Guides, which were begun in 1951 by the
architectural historian Sir Nikolaus Pevsner (1902-83) with the aim
of providing an up-to-date portable guide to the most significant
buildings in every part of the country, suitable for both general
reader and specialist.
Useful Websites
English Heritage – Pastscape
This online resource from English Heritage’s National Monuments
Record (NMR) provides an easy-to-use way to find information
about many of England's ancient and historical sites, buildings
and monuments. The information within PastScape is taken
directly from the NMRs
national historic environment database containing nearly 400,000
records on the archaeology and buildings of England and its
territorial waters. These records contain descriptions of any
interesting archaeological details, pictures (where available),
and links to maps and aerial photographs on other websites. The
site is free to use and there is no need to register.
The
National Archives
This site combines the former Public Record Office and Historic
Manuscripts Commission including parts that used to be included
on the Public Record Office website where you can access the
on-line catalogue of National Archives holdings or view their
digitised collections with
Documents Online (available for a fee), or the
Learning Curve site - containing themed galleries of
digitised documents. The site also includes areas that were
formerly part of the Historic Manuscripts Commission website
including the
National Register of Archives,
Archon: list of archival repositories in UK, and the
Manorial Documents Register (which at the moment only covers
Wales, Hampshire, the Isle of Wight, Norfolk, Surrey, Middlesex
and the three Ridings of Yorkshire).
