TopBy Age Range
As librarians we believe that stating age ranges for books can be unhelpful and constricting. Some ten year olds are perfectly happy with easy readers; others are reading Lord of the Rings. Older reluctant readers might not have the skills to read books that other young people of the same chronological age enjoy, and many books written for younger children can still provide enormous pleasure for teenagers or indeed adults.

At the same time we do recognise that a recommended age is high on the list of priorities for teachers and parents and all the books reviewed in Book Selector are given an age, the lowest age likely to enjoy the book. This is determined by various factors including not only reading age, but also subject matter: a book might deal with complex issues, or contain strong language or violence or sex.

You can search by age by choosing a range from the drop-down menu.

TopBy Subject
You can type in up to two subjects. Very common terms, such as Adventure or Horror, appear in the menu on the basic search page. You can also use them in advanced search, but they will give a large number of results: a second subject will narrow your search. Adventure and Victorians for example will give adventure stories set in the 19th century. In addition to these common terms there are hundreds of more specific terms that you can type in, from Apartheid and Asperger's Syndrome to Witches and Yetis. Category terms are the one area in which we have taken the liberty of updating the original review. For example early reviews used terms such as Handicap which we have changed to Disability. Books for older readers are usually given the categories Teenage or Young Adult.

TopBy Author
Type in either the author's last name, or full name in the format Last name, First name.

By Title
You can type in the full title, if known, or keywords from the title. Spyglass for example will bring up The Amber Spyglass.

TopBy Year of Review
The year of the review is usually, but not necessarily, the date of publication. Books published at the end of one year may be reviewed at the beginning of the next and sometimes an older title may be revisited: in this case a mention of the publication history is made in the text.

Keyword Search
You can also enter a short phrase, a word or part of a word to search the whole of Book Selector. This facility is particularly useful for unusual terms. For example, we have not have a subject category for Zombie but you can easily access any review in which this word appears.

Even more usefully, you can use this type of search for character's names, for example Lyra, or place names such as Edinburgh.
