Electrical waste

Computer

You can now recycle all domestic electrical and electronic equipment for free at your Household Waste Recycling Centre (HWRC). Recycling costs are met by the companies who make the goods.

Computers

Please wipe your hard drive before recycling.
There are several ways to do this: 

  • Re-format the drive.  A disc is usually supplied with the computer when purchased.
  • If your computer uses Windows XP you can run the system recovery set-up file (should be on the boot loader) 
  • Take the hard drive to a reputable computer repair shop and ask them to wipe it. Check they will guarantee their work against possible data theft, there may be a charge for this service 
  • Remove the hard drive before recycling the computer

Large appliances

Washing machines, clothes dryers, dishwashing machines, electric cookers, electric hot plates, microwaves, electric heaters, electric radiators, fanning and ventilation equipment, electric device beds etc. These are all dismantled and the metals recycled.

Fridges, freezers and air conditioning units have their cooling gases and insulation foam removed for treatment and the metals are recycled.

TVs & any products with a screen

TVs, minicomputers, personal computers, laptops etc.  The screens are removed first. Then the glass, metal and plastic are recycled.

Small appliances

Vacuum cleaners, sewing and knitting machines, irons, toasters, fryers, coffee machines, knives, hair cutting equipment, hair dryers, tooth brushes, shaving equipment, clocks, watches, scales, equipment for opening or sealing containers, radio sets, video cameras, stereos, audio amplifiers, musical instruments, facsimile, copiers, printers, mobile phones, telephones, answering machines, typewriters, desk calculators, mice and keyboards, PDAs, Ipods and MP3 players etc. They are dismantled for metal and plastic recycling.

Fluorescent lamps

We remove the hazardous mercury for reuse or treatment. The metal and plastic is then recycled.


Collection service

If you need items collecting please contact your District Council.  There will be a small charge.

Users of electrical goods

You need to ensure all electrical goods are recycled. Please contact your suppliers of electrical goods and see what services they are offering you.

Suppliers of electrical goods

Business's that manufacturer, brand or import electrical or electronic products are responsible for storing, treating or dismantling items when they are no longer needed.
