Abandoned vehicles
Abandoned vehicles found on the highway or on other public land are the responsibility of the local district council to remove.
- Vehicles in poor condition will be destroyed after a seven day notice period.
- Vehicles in better condition are subject to a 21 day notice period during which attempts will be made to find the owner.
Arrangements for the collection of these vehicles will vary from district to district.

For vehicles left on private land please contact the district council for further information.
If the vehicle is not abandoned but your vehicle which you can't dispose of eg it doesn't sell easily, you are responsible for finding a legal disposal point. Car dealers sometimes buy non-running or failed MOT cars.
We do not endorse, warrant or guarantee these companies. Your duty of care requires that you make all reasonable checks to ensure the waste carrier/disposer is authorised to accept your waste. Please ensure they complete the relevant section in the V5c (log book), which you then send to the DVLA to prove you no longer own the vehicle.
