8th May 2010 saw the exciting launch of Walk Wycombe, a project designed to embed walking in the daily routine for those who live and work in High Wycombe, as a foundation to a healthier lifestyle. Whether that's to the shops, to work, or out on one of the three new Walk Wycombe routes, there's an option for everyone with the advantages of increased fitness and benefitting health.
The launch included a big event in High Wycombe town centre with a range of activities from a Walk Doctor offering free advice and writing walking 'prescriptions', to a Reflexologist offering foot treatments and a range of children's activities. Steve Baker, MP for Wycombe was also in attendance and officially opened the event; please click here to view photos taken from the launch.
Other features of Walk Wycombe include Walkit.com, an easy to use urban walking route planner where you can get a route map between any two points, including your journey time, calorie burn, step count, and carbon saving. It’s quick, free, healthy and green. Try it for yourself on www.walkit.com A number of new notice boards have also been installed around the town complete with new maps and information about other community events. These new maps include 3 highlighted walks, key points of interest and links to the Simply Walk trails. With the new signs and maps in Wycombe, walking is an even more exciting way to discover your town
Walk Wycombe in Schools!
Transport for Buckinghamshire has taken the Walk Wycombe initiative a step further by engaging with schools across the town to help promote the project. Schools can promote Walk Wycombe by encouraging children, young people and families to adopt a healthy lifestyle, using the Walk Wycombe routes as part of their journey and taking part in active travel. They have been designed to take in some of the interesting sights High Wycombe has to offer, including our community park The Rye.
Schools can borrow a banner to display on their railings to show residents and passers-by that they are taking part in the initiative. Another pull-up banner can be placed in a prominent position in the school and maps are available for anyone who is interested.
We also encourage schools to try out the route planners that have been created for High Wycombe on www.walkit.com. They are easy to use - you can get a route map between any two points, including information about your journey time, calorie burn, step count, and carbon saving. School pupils will be able to see what their journey to/from school could achieve if they walk it.
Walk Wycombe is an excellent project to get more people walking in the local area. To find out how your school can get involved please contact the Travelchoice Team.
