Traffic counts

We carry out traffic counts throughout the year. Traffic counts can be carried out for a wide range of reasons and can be of three main types.

Continuous counts

A small number of sites in the county are fitted with electronic equipment which continuously measures the flow of vehicles in each direction and some also identify vehicle class. Many more sites are regularly fitted with pneumatic equipment which does the same job for a few days/weeks before being moved to another site.

Regular turning counts

Across the county traffic flows and movements are collected once during the year at a 150 sites, which are predominantly at junctions.

Occasional counts

At various locations across the County traffic flows and movements are occasionally collected when the information is needed to assist with the design of highway engineering or traffic management projects.

There is a considerable archive of data. We usually charges businesses who request traffic flow data a rate of £200 + VAT per traffic count requested.
