Traffic calming

Traffic Calming

Traffic calming is any measure which seeks to reduce vehicle speeds eg road humps, chicanes, islands, signing, lining, coloured surfacing etc.

Schemes are applied based upon the following:

  • Monitoring by us and investigation by Local Safety Schemes Team will identify accident sites requiring traffic calming through study of police accident data
  • Application via local parish/town councils for Local Committee Delegated Budget Funding
  • As part of approved Highways Control scheme
  • If funded by third party eg town/district/parish

Process

A draft scheme is designed to enable initial consultation with the parish/town/district council and others, e.g. the police, emergency services, motoring organisations

Further consultation is undertaken as necessary and the results of the consultations are considered by the appropriate councils

Implementation of schemes will be undertaken only by our approved contractors to an agreed timetable and unless otherwise agreed, we will be responsible for all maintenance.

All schemes are monitored before and after implementation and the results will be used to review or amend the scheme in future.
