Signs and markings

Speed limit markings are governed by legislation.
Terminal signs are provided at the start and finish of each speed limit. One on each side of the road is normally required. These signs must be lit on A roads when placed within 50 metres of a street lamp.
Repeater signs are smaller speed limit signs and must be provided at regular specified intervals along a length of road, except:
- In a 30 mph speed limit with street lighting
- In 20 mph zones
- On motorways
- On national speed limit roads without street lights
It is forbidden by law to provide repeater signs on roads where there is a 30mph speed limit and street lights.
Road markings
Speed limits can also be marked on the road surface. As new limits are made, these round markings will be added to the road surface at the start of each lower limit.
By law these markings can only be placed alongside terminal or repeater signs. As a result, they cannot be used within 30mph street lit limits,
Signed speed limits are the maximum legal speed and don't mean that it is safe to drive at this speed.
