Schools

We have a number of initiatives and resources available to secondary schools. The resources available range from lesson plans to presentations, free magazines to information about theatre in education and driver training.

Learn and Live

With Buckinghamshire Fire & Rescue Service we offer a road safety presentation 'Learn and Live' aimed at the 15-24 age group.

Novice drivers in the 17-24 age group are over-represented in casualty statistics. Research shows new drivers are more likely to have a crash within the first 2 years of passing their test, due to their inexperience. The presentation helps novice drivers realise how vulnerable they are at this time.

The presentation takes approx 30 minutes (though this can be adjusted to suit your requirements) and is delivered by a member of the Fire & Rescue Service. The first part is an interactive session where the presenter discusses issues such as speeding, peer pressure, seat belts and the use of mobile phones while driving. The second half is extremely graphic road safety adverts from other countries.

This presentation pulls no punches and may be unsuitable for certain people, such as anyone who has recently been affected by a road traffic collision. However, our recent research with young drivers shows that material like this has the greatest impact on their attitude towards safer driving.

We are pleased to be able to offer this free presentation to your school.

Safe Drive Stay Alive (SDSA)

This is an innovative theatre in education project that partners across the Thames Valley produce.  It involves a film and stage show about a young driver out for the evening with three young friends. Under pressure from his friends he loses control and crashes his car, killing one of the passengers and injuring the other two. A victim, a police officer, fireman, paramedic and casualty surgeon talk about what it is like for them to deal with a collision.

First Car magazine - available to download below

FirstCar magazine aims to help 16-19 year old learners and drivers find out more about driving and staying safe on the road.  The magazine is available twice a year for schools in Buckinghamshire and can be ordered and delivered to you for free on a regular basis.

Perfect Partner CD

Perfect Partner is an interactive guide for accompanying drivers and learners. The pack includes a CD that has dedicated sections for the accompanying driver with resources, information on how to handle different situations and tips for carrying out effective practice sessions. Parents and driving instructors are being offered this resource free of charge. Order the CD Please include your name, contact address and contact number

Get in Gear young driver course

The Road Safety Team is offering a FREE young driver course called Get in Gear. Perfect for students that have passed their driving test in the last year. It consists of a theory session where we get the opportunity to discuss key risks for novice drivers, such as carrying passengers, fatigue, alcohol and distractions and we help them to consider strategies to deal with these issues.

Following the theory they are contacted by an Approved Driving Instructor (ADI) who will take them out on 2 x 2 hour drives. The drive covers the types of routes where novice drivers are most likely to be involved in a crash, such as rural routes and also faster roads such as motorways.

Drivers that complete the course may be entitled to insurance discounts.

The course is worth £150 but we are offering it FREE for a limited period.

We are running the theory courses in many schools in Buckinghamshire and would like to offer your school the opportunity to become involved and have The Road Safety Team deliver Get in Gear to your students.

If this is not possible then perhaps you could encourage your students to register for the course.
Students can register for the scheme on the website  www.get-in-gear.co.uk

We would be grateful for any help in promoting the scheme to new drivers within your schools, as sadly they are overrepresented in the number of people killed and injured on our roads and we would like your help to change that.

If you would like some posters and application forms to promote the scheme to your students or for more information e mail June Howlett on jhowlett@buckscc.gov.uk
