Lesson plans

In 2005 the Road Safety and School Travel Planning teams worked with the charity Miss Dorothy to produce a poster addressing safety on the school journey. This poster was originally produced for upper Key Stage 2 children. Since the production of these posters, appropriate lesson plans have been developed to support this resource for all primary age children.

The Travel Planning team invited schools across the county to pilot these resources and subsequently compiled an evaluation. The conclusions of the pilot confirmed that both teacher and children thought the poster and plans were an interesting and valuable resource to address Road Safety/School Travel Planning issues. In addition schools running the pilots commented that the posters were an excellent resource to support SEN and EAL children and could also be used across different subject areas eg: data handling, speaking & listening, drama etc.

From the findings of the evaluations we have now been able to provide fully comprehensive lesson plans to support the posters:

• Key Stage 1 (KS1) - There are 2 lesson plans and each class will need one poster with the teacher acting as scribe to complete the sections for the class
• Key Stage 2 (KS2) - There are 2 lesson plans and each child will require a poster to complete the relevant sections.

It is at the discretion of the school and teacher as to when and how to introduce these lessons into the curriculum and if required, the lessons can be taught over more than 2 lesson slots. For schools that do not have the available table space it is suggested that this resource be cut down and presented as a more manageable booklet for children to work on

It is worth noting that a couple of the activities were regarded as inappropriate or irrelevant (mobile phone activity & chicken activity). These sections of the lesson plans have been highlighted in italics and it is at the discretion of the teacher as to whether they think it appropriate to teach these elements.

The lesson plans also include an assessment opportunity, which pilot schools found useful for both KS1 & KS2 children. There is also potential to use the teachings of this resource to form the basis of a school assembly, giving the children the opportunity to share their work with parents and carers.
