Is driving for your company a risky business?

As an employer or senior manager should I allow my employees to carry out a driving activity (however minor) for my company without assessing whether they are a potential risk to themselves or others?
You have a `duty of care’ towards employees when they drive while they are at work. You also have a `legal` responsibility to ensure that others are not put at risk by your work-related driving activities.

At work driving is the biggest cause of work related accidental death. Find out how risky it is - Your Company’s Driving Risks
There is a strong Business Case for addressing work related driving risks:
- The majority of costs incurred in crashes, whether injury related or not cannot be insured against.
- Year on year the costs of doing nothing about at work crashes gets more expensive and eats into company profit margins.
- In 2000 the HSE estimated the costs to employers arising from ‘at-work’ road traffic crashes to be in the region of £2.7 BILLION per annum.¹
