Cycling in Aylesbury

Aylesbury gained its status as a Cycling Demonstration Town in 2005.  During the first three years as a Cycling Town, we focused on using ‘soft measures’ such as route signing and promotions to encourage local people to get on their bikes.  We named and coloured our eight  main cycle routes after gemstones to make them easily identifiable to the public, and pioneered a radical new approach to signage, counting down to destinations in minutes rather than miles.  A town-wide promotional campaign, including a local radio jingle, route-specific guides, and numerous events have been successful in launching routes and spur residents to action.

With renewed funding, Aylesbury’s programme now aims to deliver more infrastructure measures while maintaining a strong promotional campaign.  The whole network is subject to route continuity improvements and in four locations we have installed raised crossings that increase priority to cyclists.  A new 200m long shared use bridge opened in April 2009 connecting the south side of Aylesbury to the town centre.  This Spring a new route will be added to the Gemstone Cycleway network– the Topaz Way. This route takes you via the Bourg Walk through to Southcourt. Walton court and Hawkslade providing a useful links for both Ashmead and Oakgreen Schools.

To help discover the wonderful experience of cycling, as well as some of Aylesbury’s hidden treasures, we have also produced four fun Pirate treasure hunts on the Gemstone Cycle Routes.  To download the treasure hunts and view the special Pirate treasure map visit our website www.cycleaylesbury.co.uk
