Cycle security

Lock

You can reduce the chances of losing your bike to a thief if you spend a little time and money on cycle security. The best deterrent is to lock your bike up with a good quality lock, ideally a hardened steel U-type lock.

Most cycles stolen in the UK last year were locked up in public places, so quality and style of bike lock is important.  If a thief can't steal your bike quickly and easily, they'll move on to one they can. If you've got a high value bike, check that your home contents insurance covers theft of bikes in a public place.

A bike is stolen every 71 seconds, here are some tips to help secure your bike

  • Use a good quality hardened steel U-type lock
  • Avoid cheap chain and cable locks as they can be cut easily
  • Park your bike in a well lit, public area
  • When not in use, always keep your bike locked whether it’s outside or in a shed or garage
  • Always lock the door to the building where your bike is stored
  • Having an unattractive bike can put thieves off!
  • Use an ultraviolet pen to mark your postcode on the frame; if it does get stolen and recovered, it will be returned to you.
  • Keep a note of the name, model and serial number, and if possible a photograph,  in case you need to pass the details to the police.

Reducing cycle theft is one of the many ways we can all work together to help reduce crime and disorder in the County.
