There are some simple, easy things you can do to stay safe during your journey
Wear a cycle helmet
To reduce the severity of head injuries. Make sure your helmet fits correctly.
Be seen
Make sure you wear fluorescent clothing during daylight hours. Fluorescent material works out of doors in daytime because it reacts to the ultra-violet rays in sunlight and everyone will be able to see you!
Get something reflective and make sure that you are seen at night. Reflective material works in the dark because its special surface reflects the light from streetlights and vehicle headlights.
If you do not have anything fluorescent or reflective, then wear something bright or light coloured.
Be confident
Ride about one metre from the kerb to ensure you have enough space. Use arm signals to let other road users know what you intend to do and always look carefully behind you before any manoeuvre.
Choose a route away from busy, fast roads
Remember to follow the Highway Code - don't jump red lights, ride on pavements or disobey road signs.
Keep your bike in good working order
When cycling, always carry a tyre pump, puncture repair kit and basic tools such as a cycle spanner and tyre levers.
Keep your bike safe
When you leave your bike, a 'U' lock is the best means of securing it safely. Remove quick-release front wheels or seat or padlock them with your bike.
