Biking basics
The Biking Basics course teaches 6-9 year olds how to ride a bicycle safely in an off-road situation. It usually runs for 6 1-hour sessions. Children who complete the course will be awarded a certificate.
The course covers:
- where it is safe to ride a bicycle
- suitable clothing and helmets
- how to carry things safely
- the name and function of the main parts of the bicycle
- how to check it for faults
- controlling a bicycle including stopping, parking, turning and emergency stops
- what to look and listen for when riding.
The course is divided into theoretical and practical sessions. It can be run as part of the normal school curriculum (theory work) coupled with practical lessons that could be run by parent volunteers. Schools must check any parent volunteers have completed Criminal Records Bureau checks for Enhanced disclosure.
Parents’ should provide a safe bicycle and a correctly fitting helmet.
