Current status

We formally consulted in September 2004 with local councils and local representatives of all types of road user.

Since then the proposed limits have been reviewed and revised to take into account new national guidance on setting speed limits issued in August 2006.

The Area 8 speed limit review working group met in July 2007 to decide on the proposed changes to speed limits for public consultation.

Public consultation took place in October 2007 to allow all interested parties to review the proposals and make their views known. Over 300 responses were received. These responses were carefully considered.

The working group met in January 2008 to discuss all the responses from the public consultation and make the final recommendations for change.

A report on the proposed changes was approved by our cabinet member in February 2008. A summary of the views expressed and the approved recommendation is available in the Cabinet Member Reports at Members Reports

Implementing the changes

Once the legal documents, the Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO), are confirmed and publicised, the speed limit will be shown by signs and markings on the road surface at the beginning of the new speed limit. The Traffic Regulation Order is scheduled to be sealed on 12th March 2008 and become operational on 21st March 2008

The police will be able to enforce the new speed limits once all legally required signs and markings are in place

After the changes are in place

We will continue to monitor and review the effects of the changes.

  • We measured the speeds, amount of traffic and numbers of crashes before the change. These will  be measured again and the results compared
  • We will hear the views of those affected by the changes
  • We will seek the views of district, town and parish councils
  • You will be able to complete questionnaires to let us know what you think.
  • An independent market research company will carry out a random telephone survey in the area.

The working group will meet again to review the information received and decide if any further changes should be recommended. This will take place once all the speed limit reviews have been completed.
