We formally consulted on initial speed limit proposals in 2005 with local councils and representatives of all types of road user. Some consultation on speed limits also took place as part of the Stoke Hammond/Western Linslade bypass consultations.

It was decided that speed limits on roads near to the bypass should be put in place at about the same time as the bypass is completed. These speed limits form Phase One of Area 12.  The rest of Area 12 forms Phase Two

What happens next - Deciding the changes

The working group will meet to discuss all the responses from the public consultation and make final recommendations for change. This is expected to take place in November 2010

A report on the proposed changes will be written and presented to our cabinet member for approval. This is expected to take place by the end of 2010.

Once approved the new speed limits will be implemented. This is expected to take place early summer 2011 . ( This has been delayed from our intended 2010 implementation due to budget cuts.) A summary of the views expressed and the approved recommendation will be available in the Cabinet Member Reports

Implementing the changes

Once the legal documents, the Traffic Regulation Orders (TRO), are confirmed and publicised, the speed limit will be shown by signs and  also by markings on the road surface at the beginning of each lower limit.
To help drivers get used to the new limits, we will use a vehicle activated speed indicating device on a temporary basis within most of the new limits.

The police will be able to enforce the new speed limits once all legally required signs and markings are in place

After the changes are in place

We will continue to monitor and review the effects of the changes. We measured the speeds, amount of traffic and numbers of crashes before the change. These will  be measured again and the results compared

  • An independent market research company will carry out a random telephone survey in the area.

The working group will meet again to review the information received and decide if any further changes should be recommended. This will take place once all the speed limit reviews countywide have been completed.
