Current status

New speed limits were installed during March 2011. The formal Traffic Regulation Order was made on 22nd February and came into force on 31st March.

See map of affected areas

The police will be able to enforce the new speed limits once they have confirmed that  all legally required signs are in place.

To make drivers aware of the changes we will provide temporary vehicle activated signs  . These will be moved from place to place across the area, remaining in each location for  1-2 weeks.

Later this summer we hope to  install speed limit markings on the road surface at the start of most of the new speed limits to remind drivers that they are entering a  change of speed limit.

Deciding the changes

We formally consulted on initial speed limit proposals in Spring 2005 with local councils and representatives of all types of road user.

The initial proposals were revised to take into account further requests received and to check that they met new national guidance ( issued August 2006) on setting speed limits

An area briefing meeting was held in September 2008 to provide Parish, Town and District Councillors with information about speed limit issues. On 25th August 2009,the Area 11 speed limit review working group discussed the draft proposals and decided to advertise a number of proposals for public consultation.

Public consultation took place from 23rd November 2009 to 5th January 2010.

Parish, Town and District councils and groups representing different types of road user were formally contacted to take part in the consultation.

Large notices were placed alongside roads within the area, to make drivers aware of the proposed changes and give them the opportunity to make comments. The proposed changes were advertised in the Public notices section of the Bucks Herald on 25th November 2009

More information, including maps of the proposals, was available for downloading from this website or for inspection at :-

  • Aylesbury Study Centre, Walton Street, Aylesbury
  • Long Crendon Library, High Street, Long Crendon.

The majority of the proposed changes were for new 30mph or 40mph limits on minor roads within communities.
Very few changes were proposed to existing limits on A or B roads- only on the A41 ( Kingswood) and B4011(Long Crendon & Oakley).

The plans of the proposals also showed some existing lengths of 30mph and National speed limit which wereare not being changed on the ground, but have been  were included in the formal process in order to consolidate and simplify numerous old speed limit orders into a single Traffic Regulation Order).

On the 24th February 2010 the working group met to discuss all the responses from the public consultation and make final recommendations for change.

A report on the proposed changes was presented to our cabinet member for decision and this took effect from Friday 16 July 2010, the report and supporting documentation can be viewed at Cabinet Member Reports

After the changes are in place

We will continue to monitor and review the effects of the changes.

  • We measured the numbers of crashes before the change. These will be measured again and the results compared
  • We will collate any feedback received after the new limits are implemented
  • If future budgets allow we may carry out a further review of Area's 8 to 14 which may result in further changes.
