Be wary of door to door carpet salesmen. High Wycombe

A head teacher in High Wycombe has been approached by a cold caller offering carpet for sale. When the sales person was questioned further, he could not or would not disclose his companies details. Thankfully no money changed hands. We are concerned that the cold caller is likely to try and off load his carpet on other unsuspecting business.

Itinerant gang targets Buckinghamshire businesses

We are investigating three complaints from businesses which have been duped into agreeing to have work completed on their premises believing the service was free. Itinerant traders, believed to be part of a group working out of Doncaster, are targeting commercial premises. We are aware they have targeted a farm, restaurant and private school. The trader approaches a junior member of staff, at a time that managers are usually away from the premises. They have left over resurfacing material that they must get rid of, suitable for a drive or car park; the gang say the materials are free. The member of staff is coerced into agreeing to the gang starting work. When the manager or owner returns he finds a half completed job, which is always of poor quality. The traders will then demand an exorbitant amount of money before they will complete the job, explaining the materials are free but there is a charge for labour. The gang make threats of personal violence or damage to property unless the business pays up. We are aware the gang has so far demanded a total £23,000.

Data protection scam

Local companies are still receiving scam letters, concerning Data Protection legislation. We have information about companies who are targeting local businesses requesting fees in the region of £95 + VAT for them to register under Data Protection legislation. Businesses have been receiving official looking paperwork stating that it is a criminal offence to fail to register and that businesses should complete the form sent, to commence registration immediately. Your business may need to register in accordance with the Data Protection Act 1998. You can do this yourself for £35 and no VAT is payable. The Information Commission provides further information about the Data Protection Act 1988, visit the website or telephone 01625 545740.
