What do Governors do?

Protractor, compass, ruler

The main responsibilities include determining the aims and overall conduct of the school with a view to promoting high standards of educational achievement. Specific duties may include setting staffing levels, appointing headteachers, setting and agreeing the school budget, ensuring that a broad and balanced curriculum is delivered, as well as monitoring health and safety and the management of the premises. School Governors work as a team with the Headteacher to raise the standards of achievement for all pupils at the school.

You don’t have to be an ‘expert’. There are many free training courses organised by the LEA to help you with your responsibilities. You do need to be able to work as part of a team, and have some spare time to attend meetings and read related papers.
