Review of the Local Government Pension Scheme

The LGPS has seen a number of regulatory changes in recent years and the publication of Lord Hutton’s final report on Public Service Pension Provision in March 2011 continued this trend. In the report he concludes that it should be possible for public sector employees to continue to have access to good quality, sustainable and fairer defined benefit pension schemes that deliver decent retirement incomes, but that in order to do so there will need to be comprehensive reform.
A statutory consultation proposing changes to local government pensions that deliver fair cost savings was published by the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG) on 7 October 2011. To view the consultation document in full, please visit CLG's website. The closing date for responses to the consultation was 6 January 2012.
On 2 November 2011, the Government revised its offer and published a paper 'Public Service Pensions: good pensions that last' setting out its views on public service pensions reform, and provided a further update on the state of discussions with pension schemes and trades unions.
The new LGPS 2014 project
Following the acceptance (in December 2011) by Government of a principles document submitted by the Local Government Association (LGA), UNISON and GMB on how to take forward the reform of the LGPS in England and Wales, the LGPS 2014 project was set up to reach agreement on the elements of the new scheme, together with the management and governance of the scheme going forward.
Please note: The Pensions Team are unable to produce quotes based on the proposals. We should be able to provide quotes once the Regulations are in place and our pensions administration software updated (most likely Autumn 2012).
