Duties and responsibilities of an Independent Parental Supporter (IPS)
To act as an adviser and supporter to parents of children with special educational needs.
An Independent Parental Supporter may:
- Help you express and record your views
- Talk through procedures, choices and the implications of choices
- Help you as partners to be fully involved in the assessment and statementing process
- Help with paperwork!
An Independent Parental Supporter is not:
- An advocate
- A legal advisor
- A negotiator
- Here to win
- A family counsellor
An Independent Parental Supporter can:
- Visit you at home to discuss your concerns
- Provide you with information on your rights and responsibilities as parents, on the law and local procedures and policies
- Help you consider Proposed Statements
- Help you in negotiations with the Local Authority
- Attend Annual Reviews or other meetings with school staff
