Council provides a 'Healthy Take Away' for primary school kids

Date: 11-03-2010

The circus comes to town for 2700 Buckinghamshire primary school children next week, bringing a mixture of theatre and education as part of the Rethink Rubbish at School Waste Education Programme.

The ‘Great Taste Less Waste’ show is provided free to primary schools, through funding from Buckinghamshire County Council.

This magical theatrical educational programme will raise awareness of the need to reduce the amount of food that we throw away, and teach kids the environmental benefits of reducing food waste.

Chef Gordon Blur and his cast from The Circus Take Away, theatrical group, will visit 10 Buckinghamshire Schools to show children why food waste is an environmental problem.

Cabinet Member for Planning and Environment Councillor Martin Tett commented:"8.3 million tonnes of food is thrown away by households in the UK every year.  Reducing food waste is a major issue and not just about good food going to waste; wasting food costs the average family with children £680 a year and has serious environmental implications too. If we all stop wasting food that could have been eaten, the CO2 impact would be the equivalent of taking 1 in 4 cars off the road."

The show follows Joe, who, when shopping gets enticed by offers and ends up buying to much and spending to much.  Back home Joe has problems storing food in his already full cupboards & fridge, finding food with prehistoric sell by dates!  Luckily Chef Gordon Blur is on hand to tackle the problem with plenty of juggling, magic, comedy and singing to keep the audience entertained.
