Green Transport Week 2011
Date: 07-06-2011
Green Transport Week runs from 17-26th June and is an opportunity to celebrate the alternative modes of transport available in order to reduce our impact on the environment.
Peter Hardy, Cabinet Member for Transport said “Green Transport Week is an ideal time to think about how we travel and consider more sustainable modes. In the lead up to summer why not try an alternative to the car and get out in the fresh air and cycle or walk shorter journeys? Additionally with rising fuel costs why not try using public transport or car sharing to reduce the amount of money spent running a car?”
The week is a chance to think about driving less and Transport for Buckinghamshire is encouraging businesses to promote the week as a way of highlighting the benefits of using more environmentally- friendly forms of travel. These travel choices have additional benefits - walking and cycling not only keep you fit and healthy, but saves money on petrol, taking the train or bus beats traffic queues and car sharing saves you money while reducing congestion on the roads.
The Environmental Transport Association (ETA), the group which organises Green Transport Week, is a sustainable travel lobby group which encourages individuals and organisations to make positive changes to their travel habits. The group's message is: "The aim of Green Transport Week 2011 is to raise awareness of the impact travel has on the environment, to make people stop and think about the way they travel on every journey and to send a message to the government that the people of Great Britain care about green transportation issues."
