Stoneware coiled pot by Ian Auld, 1961
The Museum has an outstanding collection of British Studio Ceramics, built up over the last forty years. There are over 300 pieces which show the development of studio ceramics in the 20th century. The collection clearly illustrates the diversity of technique and style which has characterised British Studio Ceramics.
Particular strengths include Bernard Leach and the 'Leach school', Lucie Rie and Hans Coper, handbuilders like Ruth Duckworth, Ian Auld and Ewen Henderson and potters working in the late 1970s and early 1980s like Mary Rogers, Joanna Constantinidis and Poh Chap Yeap.
