Special needs
The annual value of a first SEN allowance is £1866 and the annual value of a second SEN allowance is £3687.
The relevant body will award a first SEN allowance to a classroom teacher in a special school or in an ordinary school who is engaged wholly or mainly:
- in teaching pupils with statements of special educational needs in designated special classes or
- in taking charge of special classes consisting wholly or mainly of children who are hearing impaired or visually impaired
The relevant body may award a first SEN allowance to a classroom teacher in an ordinary school.
An allowance may be awarded under sub-paragraph 3 only where the relevant body consider that the classroom teacher makes a particular contribution to the teaching of pupils with special educational needs in the school which is significantly greater than that which would normally be expected of a classroom teacher.
The relevant body may award a second SEN allowance to a classroom teacher who would otherwise be entitled to, or eligible, for, a first SEN allowance and who has experience or qualifications or both which the relevant body consider are particularly relevant to the teacher’s work.

Newly qualified teachers (NQTs) in England could receive a starting bonus of up to £5,000.
You could be eligible to receive a golden hello payment of between £2,500 and £5,000 if you complete a postgraduate initial teacher training (ITT) course and take up a permanent position in a maintained school or non-maintained special school in England
Golden hello payments are available for eligible NQTs who have trained in and teach the following priority subjects:
- Maths and science - £5,000
- English (including drama), information and communications technology (ICT), design and technology, modern foreign languages, religious education and music - £2,500
From 1 August 2008, trainees starting secondary postgraduate English, dance and drama ITT courses will not be eligible to receive a golden hello.
