Training

Post Qualifying (PQ) Social Work Framework

This will improve the standard of social work practice and is available to all Registered Social Workers.

From this year the Department for Children, Schools and Families intends to start 'newly qualified social worker status' for the first year of practice in children's and young people's settings. The Department of Health intends to do the same for adult care practitioners. This means consolidation units in the framework may be linked to the first 12 months of practice. The framework is also available to other professions.

There are core and optional units:

  • stand alone units
  • generic units for care of adults and children
  • specific academic units
  • specialisms - leading to graduate diplomas, honours degrees, masters' degrees or PhDs

The qualifications are academic and include national occupational standards.
The framework has three levels:

  1. PQ Award in Specialist Social Work - in depth evidence of competence
  2. PQ Award in Higher Specialist Social Work - evidence of a substantially enhanced competence
  3. PQ Award in Advanced Social Work - evidence of an ability to take a leading role

The five specialisms are:

  1. Adults, their carers and families (Adult services)
  2. Children and young people, their families and carers (children and families)
  3. Leadership and management
  4. Mental health
  5. Mentoring, practice teaching and assessment (Practice educator)

We recognise the need for you to continue to develop and will support you on relevant PQ units. We also offer opportunities for:

  • Short courses to keep up to date with practice and research
  • Attending conferences
  • Access to IT
