When flooding threatens:
- Check the Environment Agency website or call Floodline for latest information - 0845 9881188
- Block doors (with floodboards if available) and airvents with plastic sheeting and sandbags
- Move valuable possessions to a higher level (check insurance cover)
- Bring pets indoors
- Monitor flood warnings and weather reports
- Prepare to turn off gas, electricity and water supplies - store some drinking water in clean containers
- Prepare sandbags
- Register with Floodline to receive flood warnings directly
- Listen to local radio
- Check BBC Ceefax page 419 and on digital TV page 405 or ITV Teletext page 154
- If life is at risk call 999
If your home is flooded
- Turn off gas, electricity and water at the mains
- Stay in your home if you can - move upstairs unless clearly unsafe to do so
- If you decide to leave, try to stay with friends or family.
- The district council will be setting up rest centres, rescue teams will be in touch with those affected
- Take clothing, essential medication etc with you
- Don't leave pets behind. Try to make other arrangements. Rest centres will only allow them for a short time
Leaving your home
Before you leave home:
- Move valuables and property upstairs
- Lock up and close your windows
- Turn off electricity
- Turn off heating
- Pack essential medicine and a change of clothes
Going to an emergency rest centre
If you have time, bring with you:
- Snack food
- Important medicines
- Extra clothes
- A few toiletries, so you can wash
- For your baby - disposable nappies, baby food etc
- For your children - small toys, books etc
- For your pets - basket/cage/food
What to expect:
- Light refreshments
- Somewhere to sleep
When flooding recedes
- Don't turn on gas, electricity etc until systems have been checked by suppliers
- Don't throw damaged items away until your insurers have inspected them
- Throw away food that has been in contact with flood water
- Contact your water company if tap water is discoloured or tastes bad
- Air your home as much as possible
- Get advice on repair work only from registered tradesmen, beware of rogue traders
