Winslow Historic Town
Markets to Metroland - The Buckinghamshire & Milton Keynes Historic Towns Project
The towns of Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes are a defining characteristic of our landscape. They represent centres of commerce and population and also embody our county's history, forming an essential part of identity and sense of place. The urban landscape is a dynamic environment, constantly changing and adapting to modern needs, and today the pressure to accommodate new housing and related development is affecting the character and appearance of our towns.
To better understand the evolution of our towns and contribute towards their future management, we are surveying the 30 historic towns in Buckinghamshire and Milton Keynes. The towns range from the larger towns of Amersham, Aylesbury, High Wycombe and Newport Pagnell to villages that once aspired to urban status such as Long Crendon and Denham. The three and a half year project, funded by English Heritage, started in April 2007 and will produce illustrated reports for each town.
