How we help

Supporting People receive a grant from the Government which is used to provide support services in hostels, women's refuges, supported living schemes, sheltered accommodation and in the service users own home.

Supporting People do not provide these services but use the grant to:

  • pay the organisations that provide these services
  • make sure that you receive the help you are entitled to
  • monitor the quality of services being provided
  • help to develop future services and funding

The housing related support available may include

  • help with claiming benefits and organising to pay rent and other bills
  • making sure you are safe in your home
  • support with essential life skills, such as shopping, cooking and basic hygiene
  • support to access a range of appropriate other services, for example, social activities, education and training

It does not include:

  • home-care workers, who help with things like getting washed and dressed
    or
  • meals on wheels

Do you have to pay?

  • You will not have to pay for services offering short-term support (less than two years)
  • There is a charge for services offering long-term support (more than two years)
  • If you receive Housing Benefit to help pay your rent, you will not have to pay for your Supporting People service
  • If you are on a low income, you may be able to have the support at a reduced rate

Standards

These services have to meet certain standards as set nationally by the Government. These standards mean that you will be:

  • assessed for the service you need and be given a support plan
  • safe and secure in your own home
  • protected from abuse or harm
  • able to use the services that you are assessed as needing
