Extra Care housing
Extra Care housing is an increasingly popular choice for older people, offering a real alternative to residential care, whilst enabling people to remain as independent as possible. Extra Care is a model that may also be appropriate for other service user groups, and there are successful schemes in other authorities supporting older people with mental health problems, and people with learning disabilities.
Extra Care housing offers:
- self contained accommodation (usually one or two bedrooms);
- residents a choice of their own tenancy, or to become owner/occupiers, shared owners, or leaseholders; and
- access to 24 hour care on site (flexible care packages according to need).
They may also provide:
- Communal areas
- Hairdressing Services
- Laundry Services
- Library Services
- Hobby Rooms
- a Shop
Extra Care housing in Buckinghamshire
Currently in Buckinghamshire we have 48 Extra Care housing units (Heritage Care in partnership with English Churches Housing Group). We are seeking to expand our provision over the next few years to provide larger and more specialist schemes.
To this end we are working with the Housing and Support Partnership, to pull together a strategy for Extra Care housing. There are a range of housing developers who are keen to get involved in development of extra care housing in Buckinghamshire.
A strategy is being developed jointly with district councils, primary care trusts (PCTs) and with the involvement of local older people, housing and care providers and voluntary organisations.
The strategy will be available online when completed.
