We aim to acquire and preserve archival and research materials relating to the historic county of Buckinghamshire and promote their use and enjoyment to serve cultural, educational, recreational and administrative needs of present and future generations. We offer a full range of family and local history materials, using both original documents and printed sources to help you with your research.

Local Studies Library

Local Studies is now the first point of contact when visiting the Centre. It has a comprehensive collection of printed books, pamphlets, newspapers, maps and photographs of  Buckinghamshire. Many sources are on open access, but staff can always help with all enquiries.  Duplicate copies of many titles in the library are available for loan using a Buckinghamshire Library membership card. We advise phoning in advance of any visit to pre-book a reader for microform sources.

Archives

The Archives house the our own archive, commencing in 1678, and a wide variety of documents deposited by local authorities, businesses, charities, churches and families, both famous and little-known.  Archives come in all shapes and sizes, from parchment, sewn together to make rolls several metres long, to estate maps measuring up to three metres square. The oldest document dates from around 1200 but the most recent is less than a year old.
